I don't remember having an imaginary friend as a child. I tended to be a loner. A trait I see in my daughter now. She enjoys the company of others, but is quite happy and content in being by herself. She can entertain herself for hours, as could I at the same age. And often still do. Maybe it's because I'm an only child.
You know, I guess maybe I do have an imaginary friend... she's the one I talk things over with. She never really answers me though. I think she's the strong silent type.

I had hundreds of imaginary playmates as a child, although I never thought of any of them as real. They were characters that I interacted with in games on the farm, where it was 6 miles to the nearest kid my age.
There was no room in my life for an imaginary friend - my brothers demanded all my attention! :)
I've always preferred to be alone, even as a child. I've never had more than a couple close friends at a time. Hoards of people skeeve me out!
My oldest daughter LOVES to be around people, doesn't matter how many, but give her a book or something quiet to do and she'll be lost with herself for hours.
Charles: I had imaginary playmates... just never that friend you blame the way you blame the dog ;)
Akelamalu: My best friend growing up had brothers... ugh!
Leighann: They don't skeeve me out, but I too prefer just a few. I don't believe I can have the deep abiding friendships with enough people to incorporate a small village.
I don't ever recall having an imaginary friend either. Come to think of it, I don't recall either of my older ones having imaginary friends themselves. Maybe it's cuz they are so close in age that they didn't "need" one. Who knows.
Hey! I didn't know that you had some other blog action on the side! But, you can't hide from me! My stalking skills are just too impressive! :-)
Sometimes the best friend one has is self.
Tali: it's one of those mysteries of life.
Jay: what took you so long? SMOOCH!
Songbird: very wise my friend... indeed!
It's funny Anndi, because most people think I'm a VERY social-type person, when in fact, I'm not. I enjoy being with people in "small" dosages. I especially find large crowds of people overwhelming.
I can honestly say, that I'm completely content being with my own company. I somehow, always feel occupied.
Besides...it's gives me more time to talk to my imaginary friends!
tee, hee!
Hey...and I just noticed on your sidebar the quote from Anais Nin. WOW...so totally TRUE!

clay
Ron: I'm mostly the same although I manage to find a smaller group within a large crowd and I'm good.
Maybe it's a Libra trait, this being reserved (yes I am reserved mostly).
The Anais Nin quote is a daily motivator..
Clay: My darling friend. Thank you dearest. Pop in anytime. You can find me whenever you need me.
